Flashback to 1987 : Michael Flynn’s Pioneering Project in Cyprus
Join us as we take a trip down memory lane to one of FLI Global’s early milestones – the construction of a Rockfill Dam in Cyprus in 1987.
Led by our founder, Michael Flynn, this project marked a significant moment in the company’s history and set the stage for our commitment to innovation and excellence in engineering.
The Challenge:
Situated in an earthquake-prone region, the construction of the Rockfill Dam presented unique challenges.
Not only did the dam need to provide a reliable water supply to a nearby British Army base and local villages, but it also had to withstand the potential impact of seismic activity.
Innovative Solutions:
Under Michael Flynn’s leadership, FLI Global implemented groundbreaking solutions to address the project’s complexities.
One of the most notable innovations was the design and installation of a geomembrane liner on the face of the dam. This impermeable barrier not only prevented water from passing through the dam but also offered flexibility to withstand the effects of earthquakes.
This was one of the first dam-lining projects in the world.
Engineering Excellence:
FLI Global’s team of experts worked tirelessly to ensure the success of the project. The HDPE geomembrane was meticulously welded to HDPE Anchors cast into the concrete perimeter of the dam, pioneering a technique that would later become standard practice in dam lining projects worldwide.
Legacy:
The construction of the Rockfill Dam in Cyprus marked a significant milestone for FLI Global and solidified our reputation as leaders in engineering excellence.
