Powering a Sustainable Future: Solar Energy at FLI Precast Solutions 🌞

We are constantly exploring new ways to minimise our environmental footprint and contribute positively to the communities where we operate.

This commitment to sustainability has driven us to invest in renewable energy, and we are excited to share the progress of our latest solar energy initiative at FLI Precast Solutions in Carlow.

Our Solar Journey So Far: Generating Clean, Green Energy

In August 2023, we installed a 250kW solar array at our FLI Precast Solutions factory. This solar array has already generated an impressive 153.55 MWh of clean energy, enough to power approximately 38 average homes in Ireland and the UK for a full year.

To put that into perspective, that’s equivalent to running a kettle for 102,366 hours or making around 3 million cups of tea! 🍵

Looking Ahead: Plans for Expansion and Further Innovation

While we are proud of our solar achievements to date, this is just the beginning.

We are currently evaluating options to expand our solar capacity, although there are some challenges to navigate due to the limitations of our electricity connection at the site.

We are also exploring the electrification of our fleet of forklifts, with a trial run already completed recently. This move would further reduce our reliance on fossil fuels and enhance our sustainability efforts across the board.

Building on Success: Solar Energy and Beyond

This solar initiative is part of a broader effort to integrate sustainable practices into all areas of our operations. Recently, we announced another exciting project at FLI Precast Solutions — the establishment of a bee apiary with AIM native honey bees. 

This initiative, led by our Group Sustainability Manager, Daniel Blanchfield, aims to boost local biodiversity by supporting these essential pollinators. With three hives already established and plans to add more next year, we are excited to see the positive impact this will have on the environment and the community.
